TERRE HAUTE

Terre Haute is the story of a southern Indiana family living one generation after the civil war trying to eek out a living in the coal mines and farming. Dean Wilson, the patriarch, is injured in a mining accident motivating fifteen-year-old son, Charles, to take his place as the major bread winner in the family. Charles grows up quickly as he experiences work underground. Not long after starting his job, there is an explosion at the dynamite shed and Charles is pressed into rescue and recovery hastening his maturity even further. After a bout with depression and alcohol induced stupor, Dean finally steps UP ingeniously fabricating various prosthetics to replace his lost leg and aid him in farming. The characters continued to develop both in the family and community as they experience setbacks and overcome obstacles. This first book ends as the family vows to rebuild after a tornado has destroyed their barn and other outbuildings. If you enjoyed the TV series, The Waltons, you will definitely love Terre Haute.
